What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering the tip of the penis. The procedure can be done for newborn boys, children, or adults. Since it reduces HIV acquisition by about 60%, Uganda has included voluntary medical male circumcision as part of the HIV prevention strategy. It is reported that by 2022 about 25% of males in Uganda had been circumcised.

Benefits of Male Circumcision

Decreases the risk of sexually transmitted infections. According to research, circumcised men may be at a lower risk of contracting some STDs, such as HIV. However, sex that is protected and safe is still vital.
Decreases the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Males are less likely than females to develop urinary tract infections. These infections are more prevalent in males who have not undergone circumcision. UTIs should not be ignored because serious infections might affect the kidneys.
Improved hygiene. The removal of the foreskin gives direct access to the head of the penis making it simpler to wash.
Decreases the risk of penile cancer. Cancer of the penis is rare, however its occurrence is less common in circumcised men. The benefit extends to women in a way that cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men. This is because there is reduced risk of transmission of the human papilloma virus (HPV) which causes most cervical cancers in sexually active women.
Sexual health for women. The female partners of circumcised men have a reduced risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and infections from their circumcised male partners.
